“I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.” —Frida Kahlo

Transmitter is proud to present I am Frida/ Yo Soy Frida, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Frida Kahlo’s death. Over the years, Kahlo’s influence has been both an entry point into painting and an iconic reminder of Mexican culture, providing artists worldwide with inspiration culled from Kahlo’s art, persona, and iconography. Her compelling portraits are a mirror offering both self-reflection and contemporary exploitation.

I am Frida/ Yo Soy Frida, curated in collaboration with Miztl, features the work of eight artists and their reinterpretations of Kahlo's influence Hugo Andres, Virginia Ayress, Ana Bick, Daniel Cahuantzi Ramírez, Gabriela Medrano, Pony, Shark_hartlifestile, Semillero Creativo de Artes Escénicas de Tenancingo Tlaxcala.

Founded on May 5, 2013, Miztli has worked to identify and find venues and artists of Mexican artistry. Miztli’s goal and aspiration is to engage audiences in support of rich and diverse artists, showcase their talent, and create community. Over the years, tools like social media have helped influence and reach a broad audience throughout the US and Mexico, enabling the engagement of artists in the most remote places in Mexico to share their talents and connect with a larger audience. while also recognizing and supporting the unique challenges and needs that artists and culture face.
