Being a parent is no easy task on any given day, when Covid-19 prompted a “stay at home” order in March of 2020, parents and expecting parents could not even fathom the challenges lying ahead. Artist parents—already juggling parenthood, work, artistic hustling, and artmaking—found themselves in uncharted territory. Some families were forced to move, reconfigure their homes, relocate their studios, but all had to adjust their daily focus and routine. The studio work created during the pandemic took on a different rhythm, occasionally more sporadic, and at times self-reflecting. For some artists, a sudden lack of time affected the subject matter and the scale, and in some cases more time allowed for collaborations with their kids, spontaneous experimentation, and freedom.
The pieces in this show illustrate multifaceted perspectives on each artist’s experience of parenting during the pandemic, even if the influence is subtle. In some cases reactions are immediate, and in others, the artists found more time to ponder and reflect on parenthood than ever before. In addition, the show includes works by the artists’ children, who like their parents have gone through this strange year reflecting, struggling, and adjusting.
We will be open for extended hours, 1-6 pm, on Sunday, July 11th.
We are open weekends from 3-6pm and by appointment for duration of the show. Masks are required.
